Our high-end product quality and performance of our carbon and graphite materials offers the most economical solutions to customer applications. Some of the more common applications are in the manufacture of crucibles and molds, graphite heating elements, heat treating furnace fixtruing, chemical processing equipment, molten metal extrusion, pressure casting, vertical and horizontal continuous casting, centrifugal casting, graphite susceptors, heat shields and furnace linings. Our graphite materials offer economical and customized solutions for your most extreme applications and offer resistance to thermal shock, low CTE and excellent thermal conductivity. Graphite is also widely used as electrode material in electrical discharge machining (EDM), and compared to copper, graphite allows a significant reduction in production costs while providing equal or even better product quality. The SGL Group offers a wide range of product grades for EDM electrodes throughout the entire processing chain of manufacturing molding and forging tools. Their capacities extend from high roughing rates to ultra fine finishing.

High temperatures and heavy loads characterize the production processes used in glass manufacture and make extreme demands on the materials in the system components. The SGL Group produces precisely machined components from specialty graphites for the continuous production of plate glass in float glass systems. Our carbon fiber-reinforced carbon (CFC) components feature high thermal shock resistance and outstanding mechanical strength in hollow glassware production.

Metallurgy & Continuous Casting Technology |

In view of the various demands on specialty graphites used for continuous casting, SGL Group group has developed special graphite grades to meet the specific requirements of the different applications. Due to the high thermal conductivity of graphite, there is a risk of "chilling in" at the edges of rectangular or square sections of cast iron. To avoid these undesirable and extremely hard structures, the corner strips of split molds are made of carbon grades with low thermal conductivity. Thus, the cooling process at these critical points is delayed. The RINGSDORFF® R4261H grade has proved to be very effective in this respect.

The demands placed in medical technology are very high; they concern the quality of the materials used, hygiene, reliability and the precision of the products. The SGL Group produces components from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for radio technology. The low X-ray absorption levels of CFRP make it possible to work with a low X-ray intensity. Owing to its excellent properties, graphite is also used for the manufacture of the rotating anodes used in X-ray tubes. The high quality standard of the graphite and consistency in its mechanical properties make SGL Group a reliable supplier.

With more than 50 years of international experience to draw on, SGL Group is a competent supplier of carbon based parts for nuclear reactors. We have developed a whole portfolio of materials both for pebble bed and prismatic reactors. In 2001 we became the proud supplier of a current HTR project. Uniquely positioned in the industry, the SGL Group offers the full range of carbon-based products from the biggest variety of graphite types (isostatically pressed, extruded and vibration-moulded) thru fuel matrix material and Machined Graphite Spheres to components made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon (CFRC), both for structural elements as well as for Hot Gas Duct components. Carbon fiber materials from the SGL Group are used to reinforce the rotor blades of wind turbines and to provide key components for fuel cells. High purity graphites and insulation materials are produced for the manufacture of polysilicium for photovoltaic solar cells. In addition, expanded graphites can also be used for highly efficient thermal storage. For energy storage and conversion we develop innovative products and solutions in our laboratory, such as materials based on carbonized sea grass for super-capacitors. Engineering services ranging from component development to qualification tests can also be provided by the SGL Group. To fulfil the special requirements on finished parts, the SGL Group is using state-of-the-art technology for its machining work in order to meet the high quality both for precision and purity.

Even under extreme stress, materials and structures used in aerospace technology must be light in weight – and reliable, stiff and resistant at the same time. Carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials meet all of these requirements. The SGL Group covers the complete value chain in its own production facilities in Europe and the US. Structural components made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic are used, for example, to stabilize the vertical tail plane rib truss assembly of the new A380 large-capacity aircraft. In addition, our high-performance brake disks incorporating carbon fiber-reinforced carbon bring aircraft to a safe halt.

CFRP components
are characterized by low intrinsic weight and high torsional rigidity
combined with minimum overall height – properties no other material
is likely to match. SGL Group‘s carbon fiber-reinforced robot arms
often allow component weight savings of up to 80 percent while providing
higher rigidity and strength at the same time. This offers new dimensions
in achieving high-precision movements. |
